We try to complete euthanasia appointments at a time when the surgery is quieter so that you can take as long as you need. We have a consult room designed with these types of appointments in mind, that has an exit directly onto the car park. This way you do not have to walk back through reception and you can spend as much time as you need saying goodbye. You have the option to be present for the entire appointment or, if you are struggling, our nursing team is happy to step in and handle your pet with love and compassion. As animal lovers, our team will always work with you to ensure that your pet’s experience is as peaceful and stress-free as possible during their final moments.
During the procedure, a small amount of hair may be clipped from your pet’s leg (or ear for rabbits), and a soft, flexible catheter will be inserted into a vein for comfort. This is similar feeling to having blood taken. The catheter is taped and bandaged in place and your pet can be cuddled, held on your lap, or positioned in a way that is comfortable for them. An intravenous injection of an overdose of anaesthetic will then be administered, which takes only a few seconds and is completely painless. However, some pets may object to being held or to the noise of clippers. In this case, we can give them a dose of sedative before administering the overdose of anaesthetic. This may take a little longer, around 15-20 minutes, but it can be a good option for pets that may feel stressed. We will always use our experience and understanding to make this moment as peaceful, dignified and loving as possible.
We use the services of The Surrey Pet Cemetery and Crematorium following euthanasia appointments. They are a caring and professional team who offer a number of options for your pet’s cremation.
They will collect your pet from us following the euthanasia appointment and if ashes are requested, your pet’s ashes will be returned to the surgery. Alternatively, you can choose to take your pet directly to the crematorium during working hours. For further information please look at their website using the link above.
Alternatively, if you prefer to take your pet home with you following their euthanasia for a burial, our team can advise you on the practicalities of this.
Please note that it is very normal to find the loss of a pet very difficult.
If you would like some extra support please contact the surgery or alternatively call the Pet Bereavement Support Service on 0800 096 6606.
Euthanasia at home can offer a more peaceful and comfortable experience for some pets and their owners. Our team is available to visit your home at a mutually convenient time. If you prefer a time outside of our regular hours, we recommend contacting Jeremy at ‘Coming Home Vet’. They are a dedicated home euthanasia veterinary service with years of experience and offer visits at any time of the week. They provide compassionate and supportive care for all family members. Please reach out to us to discuss options for home euthanasia.
