At Portland Vets we strongly advise neutering your pet. We offer both spaying and castrations at our Horley clinic and our nursing team are happy to discuss the procedure and recovery process that your pet will experience.

We understand that some owners may think putting their pet under general anaesthesia for an elective surgery may be unnecessary, however there are many proven health and behavioural benefits to consider for neutering:

Please note, before any neutering booking we will book your pet in with one of our nurses for a pre-surgery health check.
Females – For your female dog, our team at Portland Vets recommends spaying before their first season. However, for some traditional breeds we do recommend waiting until after their first season. If your dog has already had her first season, you will need to wait 3 months before booking her in for neutering to reduce the risk of bleeding during surgery. We offer spays laparoscopically (via keyhole incision) which helps to promote quick healing and is less invasive than the traditional method. To find out more about laparoscopic procedures, visit our web page.
Males – For male dogs, castrations can be performed from six months of age, with some exceptions for larger breeds.
For both female and male cats, our team at Portland Vets recommends waiting until they are four months of age.
During your male cat’s routine vaccination appointments, the vet will check to see if both testicles have descended, however if these have not yet descended, our nurses will check ahead of the surgery appointment to ensure your pet can undergo the castration.
Portland Vets offers neutering procedures for guinea pigs, rabbits, rodents and chinchillas with our recommendation being to wait until they are at least six months old. It is essential that one of our registered nurses assess your small furry pet ahead of the surgery as an underlying respiratory condition could put them at a higher risk with the general anaesthesia. Once our nurses have thoroughly checked your pet, they can then get you booked in and will help you to make an informed choice.
