Emergencies during our opening hours
Always call first to give our team time to prepare for your arrival AND please inform us that it is an emergency.
You will receive advice over the phone and may be instructed to bring your pet to our Horley practice (or East Grinstead depending on the time of your call) where we will endeavour to make one of our vets available to assess your pet as soon as possible.

Please note that our Emergency Out-of-Hours service is primarily for our registered clients. However, we are happy to see unregistered clients if necessary – for this service there is an additional surcharge, see below:
Out of hours information
When our service operates
Portland Vets provides an Emergency Out-of-Hours service until 10pm Monday to Friday. On Saturdays we operate this service until 4pm. To be put through to our emergency vet-on-call, call our normal East Grinstead practice line – 01342 327799.
Outside of these times, Sundays and Bank Holidays, new emergency cases will be admitted to a specialist emergency clinic at Vets Now in Sutton.
The reason our own veterinary team does not accept emergency cases around the times mentioned above is so we can ensure our team are well rested and they can perform to a high standard the following day. Our dedicated team of veterinary nurses will be on site to ensure your pet is well looked after and if it comes to 4pm Saturday and your pet is still not able to be discharged, we will arrange them to be transferred to our emergency care provider so their treatment can continue. Please note that our Emergency Out-of-Hours service is for clients that have been seen by our practice within the last 12 months. However, we are happy to see clients outside of this requirement if your pet needs treatment. However, it is important to note that if this is the case then there is an additional surcharge of £47.50.
Costs of out of hours emergency veterinary care
We like to be clear with our clients when it comes to any treatment costs and our team will always be happy to provide estimates when requested.
For your pet’s Out-of-Hours initial consultation, there is a charge of £173.00 (plus the non-client surcharge if applicable of £47.50).
After 10pm weekdays, weekends and Bank Holidays, this increases to the Vets Now emergency rate of £244.00 plus £74.00 for the consultation.
Other treatments your pet needs will be charged on top of this and the treating vet will be able to provide you with an estimate.
As is set out in our Practice Terms and Conditions, please remember that you are liable to pay for your pet’s treatment at the time of appointment, whether or not this is an emergency consultation. What to expect when you call us out of hours
We have outlined a few things to expect if your pet unfortunately needs to see our team for an emergency appointment.
- When calling the normal surgery number, you will hear the voice message which gives you the option to be put through to the emergency vet. This will be either one of our team or the Vets Now Emergency Centre depending on the time you call.
- Please DO NOT just turn up at our practice – always call ahead first so we have some warning and can have a vet ready to deal with your pet if urgent treatment is required.
- When you speak to the vet on-call, they will ask you questions about the emergency and what your pet’s condition is like. If somebody is making the phone call on your behalf, ensure they know the details of what is wrong with your pet.
- Depending on the vet’s assessment, they will advise you to come straight to the clinic for treatment or will advise you of costs and treatments if your pet’s condition is not life threatening.
- Again, depending on your pet’s condition following the vet’s assessment, you may need to make some big treatment decisions. It is worth familiarising yourself with your insurance policy or figuring out what kind of lifestyle you would be happy for your pet to lead to make sure that, if something were to happen and your pet required time-critical treatment, financial constraints or family decisions will not hinder the speed of treatment.
Types of emergencies that need urgent treatment
Do not delay calling us here at Portland Vets if your pet has one of the following types of emergency:
- Poisonings – keep the packaging if possible and try to ascertain how much of the poison your pet has ingested/come into contact with. The vet will contact the Veterinary Poison Information Service (02073 055055) whilst you are on route to the surgery with your pet which will save valuable time when working on treatment and they will need information about the type of poison involved. Remember, normal household items and food can be poisonous to our furry friends so familiarise yourself with common poisons and ensure they are out of paws’ reach.
- If your pet has been involved in a road traffic accident.
- If your large breed dog’s stomach is suddenly bloated.
- Any kind of breathing difficulties.
- Persistent diarrhoea and/or vomiting.
- Male cats attempting to frequently urinate but passing little or no urine at all.
- Any other condition that is making your pet suddenly or seriously ill.
