Microchipping is a legal requirement for all dogs over 8 weeks of age, as well as being able to identify them by collar and tag. For cats, the law is changing soon to make it a requirement that any cat over 20 weeks of age must be microchipped.
Microchipping is an affordable option (approximately £25 including registration) that can give you the best chance of being reunited with your pet should they become lost or stolen.

How does the microchip work?
The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and will be inserted under your pet’s skin by a veterinary professional. Each microchip contains a unique identification code that will be assigned to your pet on a central microchip database. These codes can be read by handheld scanners, which vets, the police and animal rescue organisations have access to. This efficient identification process helps with the reunion of pets and their owners, however, please note that it is the responsibility of the pet owner to keep their contact details up to date to avoid delay or confusion.
