Please note that our emergency out-of-hours service is primarily for our registered clients. However, we are happy to see unregistered clients if necessary – for this service there is an additional surcharge, see below:
Portland Vets provides an Emergency Out-of-Hours service until 10pm Monday to Friday. On Saturdays we operate this service until 4pm. To be put through to our emergency vet-on-call, call our normal East Grinstead practice line – 01342 327799.

During the week and on Saturdays, our dedicated veterinary nurses will be on site to ensure your pet is well looked after and if it comes to 4pm Saturday and your pet is still not able to be discharged, we will arrange for them to be transferred to our emergency care provider so their treatment can continue. The reason our own veterinary team does not accept emergency cases after the times mentioned above is so we can ensure our team are well rested and they are performing to a high standard the following day for our clients.
Please note that our Emergency Out-of-Hours service is mainly for registered clients that have been seen by our practice within the last 12 months. However, we are happy to see unregistered clients if necessary – please note, if this is the case there is an additional surcharge of £47.50.
We like to be transparent with our clients when it comes to veterinary treatment costs and our team will always be happy to provide estimates when requested.
For your pet’s Out-of-Hours initial consultation, there is a charge of £173.00 (plus the non-client surcharge of £47.50 for those not registered with our clinic).
After 10pm weekdays, weekends and Bank Holidays, this increases to the emergency rate of £248.00 plus £82.50 for the consultation, this is set by Vets Now.
Other treatments your pet needs will be charged on top of this.
As with all veterinary treatment and as is set out in our Practice Terms and Conditions, you are liable to pay for your pet’s treatment at the time of the appointment. If you then wish to claim for your pet’s treatment from your insurance company, our team can assist you with this process. To find out more about how we can assist with an insurance claim, visit our Pet Insurance page.
