Our team at Portland Vets understands that any kind of surgery can be daunting for pet owners to consider. That is why we have a team of experienced, highly skilled veterinarians and nurses who can provide surgical care for your pet. Our surgical theatre, equipped with the latest technology, and hospitalisation facilities mean that during surgery and recovery, your pet is in good hands.
Alongside our own team we also have a fantastic visiting orthopaedic surgeon who can provide our clients and their pets the options of more specialist and complex musculoskeletal surgeries. There is more information on this on our Referral Services page.

We understand that each pet is unique and so are their surgical needs. Our veterinarians will take the time to discuss the options and risks with you to make sure that you feel confident and informed throughout the entire process. Whether it’s a routine procedure or an unexpected emergency, our team will work with you to determine the best surgical options for your pet.
Before any surgery booking, we ensure that your pet will undergo a thorough examination and offer owners the option to have a pre-operative blood test. This will screen for any conditions that might affect your pet’s surgery or their outcome.
Upon admission for surgery, our nursing team will go through a consent form and run through in detail the procedure your pet is booked for. Your pet will then be admitted to our hospital unit where they will have their own designated space whilst they are prepared by our nursing team. Post-surgery, they will return to that space to recover and be monitored by our highly trained veterinary and nurse team.
We understand that a successful surgery is just the beginning of the recovery for your pet and our team will provide you with clear post-operative instructions and follow-up care. This will help to ensure a smooth recovery for your pet.
We are committed to providing the best surgical care for your pets, and we will be here to support you every step of the way. Whether it’s a routine procedure or an unexpected emergency, we are here to provide the best possible care for your pet. The team at our East Grinstead branch is particularly proud of our modern surgical theatres and technology that allows them to provide your pet with the best and most advanced care possible. With our separate dog and cat wards, we do what we can to help keep your pet calm and comfortable during their stay with us.
Alongside the surgical tools and diagnostic equipment, we also ensure each patient is connected to a state-of-the-art monitor that will measure your pets’ oxygen levels, their carbon dioxide levels, their heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and other vitals. Our nursing team are on hand to visually monitor your pet and immediately report any changes to the operating surgeon. We also use intravenous catheters so your pet will receive intravenous fluids during the anaesthesia to help maintain their blood pressure.
For the more routine procedures, each of our vets will be scheduled a day where they complete surgeries. If you would like to book your pet in with a vet of your choice then please mention this to our reception team upon booking. However, some surgeries must be completed by a specific vet or our visiting orthopaedic surgeon. Our team will discuss this with you depending on your pet’s needs.
